Turkey packs an unusual amount of variety into one country. The hard part isn’t finding things to do in Turkey. It’s deciding how to fit them together without spending your whole trip in transit. Here’s how to think about it.

Start With Istanbul (3–4 Days)

Almost every Turkey itinerary starts in Istanbul, and for good reason — it’s the only city in the world that sits on two continents, and it has enough history, food, and neighborhoods to fill several days on its own.

Fly to Cappadocia (2–3 Days)

After Istanbul, most travelers fly to Cappadocia — it’s about a 75-minute flight, and by far the most efficient way to get there. This is the part of the trip built around one specific moment: a sunrise hot air balloon flight over the valleys and fairy chimneys the region is famous for.

Beyond the balloon flight, plan for at least one full day exploring on the ground — the underground cities, the open-air museums, and a valley hike or ATV tour through the rock formations. Two nights is the minimum to comfortably fit a balloon flight (which depends on weather and sometimes needs a backup morning) alongside everything else.

Decide Whether Pamukkale Fits Your Route

Pamukkale, the white travertine terraces and thermal pools in southwest Turkey, is a striking stop but a genuine detour — it’s not directly on the way between Cappadocia and most other regions, so it works best if you have flexible time or are also headed toward the Aegean coast.

If it fits your route, plan on one overnight stay: arrive in the afternoon to see the terraces at golden hour, and spend the morning at the ancient site of Hierapolis before moving on.

Add Ephesus If You’re Near the Aegean Coast
