Kahramanmaras City

Kahramanmaras is the name of a city in Turkey, which is located on the southeastern of Turkey. In the Islamic period, it was called Maras, and in 1973, it was officially named the Hero of Maras. Agriculture in this region is highly prosperous due to the presence of fertile land and abundant water.

This city is located at the foot of the Taurus Mountains(Toroslar) and its population in 2000 was equal to 326,198 people. Now its population is estimated at around 715,000 people.

Kahramanmaras region is famous for the production of Sahlep flour (flour made from the buds of orchids) and its own ice cream.

Maras was called Marasiob by the Romans and they say that it was built in the place of Germanicia. Muaviya bin Abu Sufyan renovated its building in the 1st century and at the end of the Umayyad period, Muslims made it their base and a large number of Muslims settled there and built a mosque for themselves. Harun al-Rashid also added to the fortifications there.

This city had a moat and two ramparts, and in the middle of it was a castle known as Marvani Castle, which was named after Marwan II, the last caliph of the Umayyad Dynasty, according to Yaqut.

In 490, Maras was captured by the crusaders led by Godfrey de Bouillon, and after that Maras became one of the important cities of Minor Armenia and remained in the hands of Christians for a while until the Armenian state was destroyed.

This city has suffered a lot of damage throughout history. The invasion of the Romans and Byzantines, the attacks of the Arabs to conquer it in 632 AD, the devastating wars of the Seljuk dynasty in 1103 AD against the people there and the displacement of the people, the attacks of the Ottomans in 1399 AD to seize and dominate this region.

Geographically, this city is located on the earthquake belt and large active faults. On February 6, 2023, earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale in Turkey, centered in Kahramanmaras, caused a lot of damage in this city.

This earthquake occurred in Turkey and Syrian cities and killed thousands of people. Currently, the death toll has exceeded 30,000.
