    Built on the order of Mehmet the Conqueror in 1465. The Topkapi Palace comprises of 700,000 square meters of and is located on the one of the high hills of Istanbul. The Walls of the Palace are 5km long and it has 26 Watch Towers for protection. It also have 3 courtyards, outer service buildings including a kitchen and hospital.

    Topkapi Palace was not only an administrative place but also educational and art center of the Empire for 380 years. After 19 century, the Ottoman Dynasty moved to the Dolmabahce Palace. High ranking soldiers lived in the palace until 1924. Then M. Kemal Atatürk converted the palace into a museum.

    Topkapı palace is a museum today and has an entry fee. You need a minimum of 2 hours for a visit and there is the Harem inside the Palace which has an extra fee payable to visit.
